The Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2019) and associated Ministerial Determinations guide the roll out of procurement under the Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (IPPPP). Since 2020, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy has determined that 28GW of new generation capacity be procured through the IPPPP, and four bid windows have since been released, including the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Bid Windows 5 and 6, and the first Battery Energy Storage IPP Procurement bid window (BESIPPPP Bid Window 1).

Following the confirmation of all required governance approvals, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy will announce the appointment of Preferred Bidders under the BESIPPPP Bid Window 1.

The Minister is also expected to sign project agreements with one (1) additional Preferred Bidder under the Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme.  The project that is ready to sign is the hybrid Mulilo Total Hydra Storage Project which will offer 75MW of combined Solar PV, Wind and Battery Storage technologies.  Minister Mantashe will further provide a status update on the other bid windows that are currently in process.
