South Africa, through the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), will host the 8th annual meeting of BRICS Energy Ministers on 18 August 2023, in Johannesburg.
The BRICS Energy Ministers’ meeting is a platform for deliberations on pertinent matters, programmes and initiatives that seek to promote cooperation, growth and sustainable development of the member states’ energy sector.
South Africa’s interests on cooperation with BRICS in the energy sector are entwined with overall national priorities of partnering with like-minded countries to address its domestic triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. In this regard, the key area of cooperation include access to financial resources at a competitive/preferential rate for the funding of strategic projects in line with country’s energy mix; Partnership and joint development of strategic energy projects both in the country, and across the SADC region; Advocate for prioritisation of funding strategic cross-border energy related projects with a continent-wide impact; Forge support for common position to advance Africa energy Agenda on Just Energy Transition, universal access, financial and technical support to transition and further accesses modern energy sources; and advance a call for BRICS common position on the transformation of the global energy architecture and governance.
