CLARIFICATION ON REGULATIONS PROHIBITING RETAIL SALES OF PETROL AND DIESEL IN CONTAINERS

Date Published: 16 Jul 2021

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has considered the concerns it has received from valid users of containers to purchase petrol and diesel for various reasons. Against this backdrop, the d ...

t has reviewed the Regulations gazetted on 16 July 2021, with the intention to clarify what is referred to by a “container”.

For the purposes of these Regulations, a “Container” refers to an object that is not approved for the holding or transporting of petrol and diesel according to the relevant South African National Standards (SANS). An amendment that contains the revised definition will be issued and gazetted soon.

The Department recognises the anxiety and confusion that may have been created, particularly its potentially adverse effect on regular and valid consumers.

We further wish to assure the public that fuel supply in areas affected by the unrests is gradually returning to normal and expected to be in smooth and full operation soon. Fuel shortages in areas not affected by the unrests are not expected to materialise.
