MINISTER MANTASHE WELCOMES END OF SIBANYE-STILLWATER STRIKE

Date Published: 18 Apr 2019

The Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe, welcomes the end of AMCU’s five-month strike at Sibanye-Stillwater’ gold operations. The parties announced the resolution of their differences yesterday.

This development augurs well for much-needed stability in the gold sector. It also points to the return to full production at the company’s operations, which is expected to impact positively on productivity figures in the gold sector. This is critical for this sector that is in decline.

Furthermore, the conclusion of the strike will result in peace, safety and security in and around the Carletonville community.

“We must never tire to create a conducive environment for meaningful collective bargaining negotiations; coupled with working and living conditions free from the fear of violence and intimidation”, said Minister Mantashe.

The Minister further noted that all social partners and stakeholders must do everything in their power to ensure a working, productive industry; and grow the economy.
