Council for GeoscienceThe Council for GeoScience, established in terms of the Geoscience Act 1993, No 100 of 1993, is the national agency that is tasked with the systematic development and maintenance of the national geoscience knowledge infrastructure for both the onshore (land) and offshore (oceans) environment of South Africa. MintekThe Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek), was established in terms of the Mineral Technology Act (30 of 1989). Mintek provides research, development and technology transfers that foster the development of businesses in the mineral and mineral products industries. Mining Qualifications AuthorityThe MQA is a statutory body consisting of the State, employer and employee organisations in the mining industry. It was established as an outcome of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) Act 1995, No 58 of 1995, and the Mine Health and Safety Act 1996, No 29 of 1996. SA Diamond and Precious Metals RegulatorThe South African Diamond Board was established in 1987 in terms of the Diamond Act, Act 56 of 1986 to regulate control over possession, the purchase, and sale of diamonds, the processing and the export of diamonds. During 2007 three pieces of legislation, namely; the Diamond Amendments Act, Act 30 of 2005, the Diamond Second Amendment Act, Act 30 of 2005 and the Precious Metals Act, Act 37 of 2005 were promulgated thereby broadening the legal mandate of the Board to also regulated precious metals. The main aim of the State Diamond Trader is to address distortions in the diamond industry and correct historical market failures to develop and grow South Africa’s diamond cutting and polishing industry. |
