DEPARTMENT MONITORING SITUATION AT SIBANYE-STILLWATER

The Department is aware of the situation at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Thembelani Shaft in Rustenburg. An estimated 1800 employees are currently underground. Mine management is assessing damage to the shaft which may have occurred during the morning shift. By law, the condition of the shaft must be assessed before the employees can be hoisted up. In the meantime, plans are being made to hoist the employees at the nearest shaft, Khuseleka.  Updates will be provided as the situation unfolds.
